Why Does Boiler Pressure Drop? How to Increase It?

25 March 2025·3 min

A drop in boiler pressure is usually caused by water loss in the system. Here's how to raise the pressure and when to call a professional.

A drop in boiler pressure is usually caused by water loss in the system. By slowly opening the filling valve under the boiler, you can bring the pressure to the ideal range of 1.2 – 1.5 bar (ideal for most boilers).

If the pressure keeps dropping, there may be a leak in the radiators or the pipework. Air-locked radiators can also affect pressure balance.

If you find yourself having to raise the pressure frequently, it definitely needs to be checked.

Expert Note

Repeatedly raising the pressure is not a solution. If the root cause is not found, the boiler and pipework may be damaged. Boiler pressure should be measured when cold. During operation, pressure naturally rises, so overfilling can cause unnecessary pressure build-up.
